...Daniele Puppi, with this splendid work "Cinema re-animated", utilizes architecture and cinematic images to move us forward into an exceptionally expressive sphere: Puppi, Shows us how by re-organizing the elements of sound and visual setting of Skolimowski's "Australiano",creates a dialogue between the two elements to create a surprising perceptual experience. Reworking with irony pieces of film in different ways shows us how important it is to breathe life into what we see, as in a divine ritual, images are brought into life again, reclaiming gravity and in so, acquiring a new dramatic and emotional determination: we move apart, we come close again, dance to the rhythm, thus breath- with our sight..."

"... In " Naked" the visual and  auditory experiences are multiplied  in such a way as to  break down and re-project images and sounds  creating a totally new experience. The intent is to engulf the viewer in an expanded visual experience whereby that visual space becomes the essential focus of the viewers involvement with the work. The sound also becomes the object of a profound post-production work by the artist through effects, amplifications and repetitions which highlight the role of sound as a physical presence within that space. ..."

"...At Hangar Bicocca, Daniele Puppi made a single gesture, on a monumental scale. The site-specific video and sound installation Fatica 16 (Effort 16), 2007-2008, altered the architecture of the space through a double movement of expansion and contraction. On the back wall, the artist projected the image of his own torso across three separate screens corresponding to the three naves that make up the space. The two side sections showed his open arms, with a cymbal in each hand. The central portion seemed completely black, but in fact what it showed was the artist's dark T-shirt, which became visible only when his arms moved, clashing the cymbals together at the center. At that moment, a loud metallic sound filled the gallery, and the image of the clashing cymbals reappeared, as rapidly as a flash of lightning, fleeting and apparently infinitely multiplied, across the pitched ceiling..."

… An huge wooden door of elegant workmanship that fell from some unknown world of the Gullivers ended up wedging right where two doors, immediately shrunken by the impact, fit together. In this site-specific work, strange but not unexpected, Puppi starts from a new zero in his experimentation leaving behind classical rules…

…The artist created Fatica n.23 in a unique space of the National Gallery in Rome: a large vaulted corridor 45 meters long, 15m high and 5m wide. Four synchronized audio-visual projections, two on the end wall and arch, and two at the front; one in the niche on the left and one on the wall on the right. The fusion of the four video projections into one single large image was obtained by the continuous shifting of the image from the walls and the arches, portraying a gigantic body (from feet to bust) that jumped in a rhythmic way, marked by a repeated and vibrant thud. The attention of the viewer was then captured by the unexpected and violent crash caused by the fall of the body within the space of the corridor. The spectator is assaulted and displaced by the close up vision of two enormous feet…

FANTASTIC VOYAGE (2021), begins from a fragment of the eponymous movie by Richard Fleischer (1966), inspired in turn by Isaac Asimov’s book. A sci-fi and absurd journey inside the human body. The unlikely scene of the voyage, has been radically transformed by the artist through an unusual presentation in which the very same image is projected in a specular way on two screens, creating the illusion of three-dimensionality.

CHIGIANA RADIO ARTE, SOUND IN SPACE|Santa Maria della Scala - Siena, IT

Audio-visual installation

Duration: 17’ 36”

The sound video installation aims to interact with the environment and its history. Relics, empty spaces, brick walls... the work seeks to give a sound to each of these elements by producing an echo that reverberates through underground spaces of Santa Maria della Scala in Siena. The noise of a centuries old story told through a bodily, rhythmical and osseous percussion that becomes real space. The body not as an iconographic element but as a sound-producing instrument.

"...Daniele Puppi's contribution to the 2008 Rome Quadriennale was Fatica n.28 Bis (Megaohm), a sitespecific video installation designed for the Palazzo delle Esposizioni's upper floor. The importance of the body in this work is even more tangible than before. The filmed image of the artist's body seems to emerge from space, absolutely shameless. Its action create physical vibrations, which go beyond mere observation or communication. The information is clear and immediate, transferred directly from the artist's body to our own.

Rather than dominating the space, Puppi embodies it, in order to smash our habit to keep existing as we reckon it's obvious. If we accept the shock provoked by this work, then we'll be able to bring our minds to a rest, to forget any associations and repetitive mechanisms we have already recorded and to discover an energy which introduces us to new dynamics..."

"...Blast is the first occasion for Daniele Puppi to presents, in a solo exhibition, his series of re-animated Cinema, on which he has been working since 2011.

These "minimal devices of multi-sensory reanimation", as Puppi defines them, are excerpts of original auteur films and b-movies re-assembled together by deconstructing, rewriting and editing the image, creating strong emotional and spectacular projections.

The sound also becomes the object of a deep postproduction by the artist, through effects, amplifications and repetitions that highlight the role of sound as a physical presence in the space.

A multiplication of the filmic and the sonic experience in which images and sounds, decomposed and projected, generate a totally new experience where the viewer is absorbed into an expanded cinema where the space of the projection becomes an essential part of the relation with the work…

Artista

Daniele Puppi
